Poppy Art

On Friday, my super cool friend Isabelle (who teaches the kids that I taught last year) invited me to visit her classroom and suggested that I do an activity with them. Of course, I chose ART! Yay! Since it was Remembrance Day, we decided to make poppy art.

As I was browsing the internet for a poppy art activity, I stumbled upon this picture and it inspired me!
Here is what we made:

It was so nice to see my students again! Thanks a bunch to Isabelle for letting me crash her party!!!

Refrigerator Copy

Gooooood morning!

I am very cheerful this morning because my doctor has finally given me permission to go back to work. I've been stuck at home due to a rough start to my pregnancy... However, I am finally going back to work on Monday! Yipeeeee!

I've been working like a little busy bee all week trying to find some fabulous ideas for my resource kiddies. Today, I am working on something called a 'Refrigerator Copy'. I got this idea on Pinterest. Gotta love Pinterest!!! The original idea comes from a blog called Fantastic 1st Grade. I liked the idea so much that I decided to make my own. Each week, I will be concentrating on teaching my students sight words, theme words (based on our weekly book), and letter sounds or blends (depending on the group).

The idea of the refrigerator copy is to encourage parents to communicate with their child about what is going on in the resource room. I hope parents will be using this tool as it could be a great way for their children to bring their school work home in a fun way!

I've been having a difficult time loading this into Scribd or Google Docs. It doesn't seem to convert properly... If you want a copy (or a blank one to fill out) please send me a comment with your e-mail address and I will send you the Word version!

Have a great day :o)

Math Activity: Shopping!!!

Hello everyone,

I would like to share with you a fabulous math activity! I use this when I am teaching money. It is very simple and quite effective. This assignment makes the task meaningful and fun! Students usually go 'all out' by making posters to display their work.

Newspaper Article Assignment

Today’s post is dedicated to my newspaper article assignment. This is something that I started last year with my 4th grade class. However, it can be used at any grade level. I really liked this assignment because it gave me the opportunity to give each student time to speak to the class about something that interested them. Students also enjoyed this because they loved to hear about different events that are happening in the world. Some of our presentations started amazing conversations in our class and a few of them led to great journal entries!

The process is rather simple. I start by sending home a letter that explains everything parents and students need to know about this assignment. I do not start the first presentation until at least a week after sending home the letter, in order to give them plenty of time to ask questions and find an article. On the back of the letter is a calendar with everyone’s assigned date. Students are assigned one presentation per month. This way, we only have a couple of presentations every day and students don’t get bored with it.

I also send home a reminder letter in the second or third month. This depends on how my students are ‘performing’. Usually, I will include a few tips to help them improve their presentations. For example, if most students are spending their time reading the article instead of talking about it in their own words, I will include this as a ‘tip’ in my reminder letter.

I am including my letter to parents, an example of a calendar, and a sample reminder letter in this post. You can download them and adjust them to fit your needs are ideas!

Interactive Math Websites

Hello fellow bloggers,
I feel like I haven't been in the blogging world in forever... This pregnancy has really drained the energy right out of me! I'm hoping to get some posts out very soon. I have so much to share with the world!
Today, I want to share an online tool. If you don't already know, I have a great website where you can find all kinds of amazing online resources. Too view my website, simply click on the frog on the left side of my blog. Enjoy!
This new addition to my website is for those math teachers out there. These sites are for grades 3-6 (unfortunately, I did not find anything for you grades 1&2 teachers, sorry!) The math games are very interactive and can be used with the whole class, on the smartboard, or by individual students when time permits. The games are designed to help students review a wide range of skills from place value to fractions!

All you have to do is click on the grade level you want:
Grade 3
Grade 4
Grade 5
Grade 6
Thanks to my buddy, Jessica, for these great finds!

I hope you enjoy these websites as much as I have!
