MONTHLY WRITING ACTIVITIES: A GROWING BUNDLE

We teachers love to find engaging activities to support our primary students’ writing. As a resource creator, I always want to make sure I have flexible, high-interest products that fit the bill no matter what your unique schedules and routines look like.

I’m building a growing Themed Writing Bundle that will be an excellent resource for encouraging your young writers. I created this bundle to suit the writing time in our school, but I think you’ll want to get your hands on it to boost your writing instruction time too.

Right now, it’s a growing bundle that you can access today! When you purchase now, you’ll get the newly-released writing resources for every month a week in advance. They include:

  • 4 new themes every month
  • 2-3 writing activities per the theme
  • Access to differentiation options like- varying lengths, different prompts, and primary and secondary lined paper

The goal is to give you as much choice and flexibility as you need to make this work for your classroom. By the end of the school year, you’ll have lifetime access to writing resources for every month!

The Inspiration for My Growing Writing Bundle

At my school, our Resource teacher spends most of his precious time pulling small groups of students out of our classes and supporting whatever skills they need to work on (mostly reading but sometimes math as well). On top of that, he very generously offers every ELA teacher one hour of “writing time” every week. This is scheduled out for the whole school year, and he stays in the classroom while we do Writer’s Workshop.

I always get the story and class writing part done before he arrives so that I can use him for the, *ahem*, crazy part… You know, that part of the writing process where kids are all actively writing, and the teachers are running around desperately trying to help them with their individual work, while simultaneously keeping the rest of our students on task? I love the opportunity to have an additional educator in the room for this part of the lesson. And it helps keep us on track for the before and after writing activities.

Before our Resource teacher arrives, we read a story together as a class. We stop every now and then throughout the story to make predictions, introduce new vocabulary words, check for comprehension, etc. We then use the theme/topic to inspire us to write. We write a collaborative story together on the board. Everyone gets to participate and share ideas for the story. We also take this time to review by modeling print concepts, appropriate spelling and grammar strategies, and thinking through our writing process.

My team and I try to be ready for this precious writing period with our resource teacher every week. But sometimes, life gets in the way, and we don’t always have time to come up with/think of fun topics or find cute writing activities. When working on writing, I usually have my students write their first draft in their journal copybooks, but I always like to have some kind of cute writing paper for their final draft so we can display it on the hall bulletin board. I created the monthly bundle to help facilitate this process for us, but made it flexible enough so teachers everywhere can integrate these writing activities into their ELA time.
